Bonžita (Cornflake and Chocolate Bars)

The shop-bought “Bonžita” bar became famous long ago for its taste and its low calorie count. As for the taste of our home-made bonžita, you will certainly have no complaints; as for the calories, well, let's say it is still one of the lightest cakes to come out of a home kitchen.

Bonžita (Cornflake and Chocolate Bars)

Preparation

  1. 1

Over low heat, stirring often, melt the margarine and the sugar. This takes about 10 minutes.

Tip: Melt the margarine and sugar together, over low heat. There is no need to caramelize the sugar first.

    Meanwhile, chop the walnuts finely.

Add the chocolate to the melted margarine and sugar, stir well, then add the honey. Return the mixture to the heat and stir so the ingredients combine well.

Add the raisins, walnuts and cornflakes to this still-warm mixture and mix everything well once more.

Spread the mixture in a greased tin and level it with a spatula or a wide knife.

Tip: It is a good idea to compact the mixture at the very end by tapping the surface with the back of a spoon or a meat mallet. That way your bonžita will not be too airy.

Serving

  1. 6

Leave the bonžita to cool, then cut it into squares or bars. Alternatively, don't put the mixture in a tin at all: shape it into balls and serve them in paper cases.

Tip: Whichever shape you choose, let the bonžita rest for at least 12 hours before serving: it is much tastier once the cornflakes have softened.
